The San Francisco 49ers were reportedly close to finalizing a contract extension aimed at strengthening the roster and setting the stage for a potential renewal with star quarterback Brock Purdy ahead of the upcoming NFL season.

This is a concession the 49ers were willing to make if it meant getting Purdy on a contract they're comfortable with. They're already banking on him being a franchise QB by paying him. The no-trade clause just erases one of the team's tools for breaking things off if they go wrong.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Purdy added a full no-trade clause in his deal as well, which means the team can’t trade him without his permission. Good for Purdy, bad for the 49ers. It essentially means the 49ers are handcuffed to Purdy for at least five years, regardless of his performance.
