The average interest rate on new variable rate mortgage agreements was 4.42% in March, unchanged from February and 17 basis points lower in annual terms, the Central Bank added.

The European Central Bank has hiked interest rates nine times since July last year. The main interest rate now stands at 4.25 per cent compared to zero 13 months ago.
