McLaren's Lando Norris beat home favourite Charles Leclerc to Formula 1 pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix as Mercedes suffered a qualifying disaster.

Lewis Hamilton was fifth, but as he chased a late improvement the seven-time world champion lost control over his Ferrari in the long left-hander of Massenet, sliding into the barriers with his right-rear and then right-front, causing a red flag that effectively ended the session.

Lando Norris put Formula One champions McLaren on pole position for the Monaco Grand Prix in track-record time on Saturday, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc alongside on the front row for his home race.

Charles Leclerc was furious when pole position at his home Grand Prix was snatched away from him by F1 rival Lando Norris. A scintillating lap put the Monegasque on provisional pole towards the end of Q3, and he stayed there right up until Norris pipped him by just over a tenth of a second.

Lewis Hamilton and Lance Stroll have both been slapped with three-place grid penalties for impeding during Monaco Grand Prix qualifying. The verdicts mean that Stroll will start from the very back of the grid and Hamilton will line up in P7 at a notoriously difficult track to overtake on.

The Monaco Grand Prix may be “the jewel in Formula 1’s crown” but the race itself is rarely must-see TV. Sometimes, it’s downright dull.
