The proposal to ban the play was originally made by the Green Bay Packers at the owners' meetings in March, but a vote was tabled while team officials continued to discuss the play.

The NFL is preparing to vote on potential rule changes involving the onside kick, playoff seeding format and the controversial “tush push” ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said last month he believes the owners will reach a consensus on the issue that involves both competitive integrity and player safety.
