  1. A joint probability distribution describes the likelihood of two (or more) events occurring together. It’s often represented in a table or matrix where each cell contains the probability of a specific combination of variable outcomes. The sum of all probabilities in the distribution equals 1.

    Key idea: If events are independent, the joint probability is calculated as: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B) If events are dependent, use: P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B | A)

    Example 1 – Independent Events Suppose in an e-commerce store:

    • Probability a customer buys a red shirt (A) = 0.3

    • Probability a customer buys a blue hat (B) = 0.2

    Since these are independent:

    P_A = 0.3
    P_B = 0.2
    P_A_and_B = P_A * P_B
    print(P_A_and_B) # 0.06

    Interpretation: There’s a 6% chance a customer buys both items.

    Example 2 – Dependent Events In insurance:

    • Probability a customer files a claim (A) = 0.1

    • Probability they receive a payout given they filed (B|A) = 0.8

    P_A = 0.1
    P_B_given_A = 0.8
    P_A_and_B = P_A * P_B_given_A
